3D Printed Animation

Plastics used for 3D printing are called thermoplastic. Meaning they can be melted with high temperature then when cooled, it will become solid again, without changing properties of the plastic.

I use 3 types of plastics for my printing

PLA is has been the most popular plastic used for several reasons.

  • biodegradable and is recyclable
  • easy to use
  • has good strength
  • good dimensional accuracy
  • it is low cost
  • many colors to choose from

Some of the cons for PLA are

  • low heat resistance
  • low UV resistance (will fade if used outdoors)
  • can become brittle and break

I use PLA plus, which has a better formula, and while it still has the same pros and cons as regular PLA, they are lessened with PLA plus.

2. PETG is gaining in popularity for 3D printing. It is easy to use, has a higher melting point than PLA and is considered food safe. PETG is stronger, less brittle, has more UV resistance, and will print smoother surfaces. It is more expensive than PLA, and comes in variety of colors, and comes in translucent colors.

3. TPU is a flexible plastic. It can be used for things like RC car tires, phone cases, stress toys, rubber like mats, shoe insoles. I have even seen models for croc like shoes and sandals.
